Where is it? Overlooking vineyards in the middle of the Barossa Valley wine region of South Australia, an hour's drive from the state capital, Adelaide.

Grape views! What else? Many guests come for the wine, using the retreat as a base while touring the region's wineries. The headquarters of famous labels such as Penfolds, Seppelts and Jacob's Creek are nearby, as are numerous boutique producers.

What about the rooms? Accommodation comprises 15 suites, each of which was redesigned last year with particular attention to detail. Tealight-candle-sized niches been carved into the walls around the whirlpool bathtubs; bathroom floors and towel-rails can be heated; and Tataia luxury bathroom amenities are provided. Stonewell suites are the most luxurious, containing gas-piped fireplaces, walled gardens and enclosed outdoor showers. Sunning terraces at the rear of each suite take in expansive vineyard views.

What else is there to do? The property boasts a secluded, heated outdoor swimming-pool and sauna; bicycles are available for rent; large, flat-screen TVs offer satellite viewing and there is a substantial DVD library.

Like dinner (the restaurant is not open for lunch), breakfasts feature the best of seasonal local produce and simple cooking.

Anything else we should know? Packages to lure guests from the confines of their suites include Breakfast with the 'Roos - a gourmet spread in a nearby conservation park; the Barossa Wine Experience, which is a tailor-made winery tour incorporating a blend-your-own session at Penfolds; and a visit to Barossa's weekly farmers' market with an Appellation chef.
