Shanghai mayor keeps his party post
Deputy secretary to stay in city - for now
Shanghai reappointed Mayor Han Zheng as a Communist Party deputy secretary yesterday, indicating he will remain in the city for now after a corruption case that led to the sacking of the city's previous party secretary.
Shanghai party secretary Xi Jinping , who took up his post only two months ago after Chen Liangyu was removed last year for his alleged role in the scandal involving the city's pension fund, introduced his new leadership team after a party meeting.
Following other cities, Shanghai slashed the number of deputy party secretaries to two from five. There were rumours that Mr Han might not return as a deputy party secretary, pending a transfer.
'Unless they were going to move him right now, it would be impossible not to reappoint him,' a western diplomat said.
The other deputy party secretary is Yin Yicui , who was reappointed to a position she has held since 2002. Ms Yin is the only woman in the upper party leadership in Shanghai.
Shanghai also appointed 10 more members of the party's powerful standing committee. They include Shen Deyong , an outsider who came to Shanghai in December in the wake of the corruption case.
