The fight against climate change requires an international effort, but the wealthiest nations must provide the leadership, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said yesterday.

While experts could provide the global vision and direction needed to develop a strategy, Mr Tsang said combating climate change would only be successful if governments, big businesses and individuals all faced up to their responsibilities.

Mr Tsang was speaking at the closing session of the three-day International Conference on Climate Change attended by world- renowned scientists, economists and environmentalists from 26 nations.

Recognising the climate crisis as man-made, Mr Tsang not only urged individuals to change their lifestyles and make sacrifices, but also appealed to rich nations to take the lead in the fight.

'Protecting against global warming must be a team effort, spearheaded by the strongest and wealthiest nations protecting and guiding the most vulnerable regions,' he said.
