Hong Kong charities are weighing up how to help victims of floods and torrential rain which have killed at least 66 people, triggered rockslides and swept away houses across southern China.

Forecasters yesterday said the heavy rain would continue for much of the week.

From Wednesday to Saturday, rain, mudslides and floods hit the provinces of Hunan , Guangdong, Guangxi , Guizhou , Jiangxi and Fujian . The flooding destroyed 48,000 houses and affected nearly 9 million people.

Bonnie So Yuen-han, head of Hong Kong Red Cross, said its mainland counterpart had earmarked 1.3 million yuan to provide tents, medication, mosquito nets and sterilisation equipment, and would determine whether an appeal in Hong Kong was warranted.

'Red Cross Hong Kong will also allocate 200,000 yuan as a first batch of flood aid,' Ms So said.
