Young Post: When  did you start investing, and why?

Sin: I began to make investments  about two years ago. I had been working for about a year.

I  had a salary, but  I realised that investments could help me make more money.  That's why I decided to  learn about the market.

YP: How much capital did you start off with and how did you learn about investing?

S: I had  HK$70,000 in savings. I decided to invest HK$40,000 on stocks and funds.

I read  the financial pages of newspapers and also watched investment programmes on television.

Also, my dad is an experienced investor. He gives me advice every now and then.

YP: How do you decide on which stocks or funds to buy?

S:  Funds are usually stable and I make long-term investments on them.

As for stocks, I'm interested in both stable and high-risk ones.

I favour China's power  companies. I think they have great potential.

Usually, after I select  a stock, I go on the internet and check out the company's background to see if it's making money or if it's in debt. I make my decision in three to five days.

Having invested on a stock or fund, I check its price on the internet regularly.

YP: What are your investment tips?

S:  You should do research before making an  investment. Don't listen to what others say.

Some time ago, I bought a stock recommended by someone else. Its price dropped drastically.

It took more than a year before the stock's value rose to what I had paid .

Since then, I've never made any investment without doing research.

Also, I think you shouldn't be too greedy. Set a target profit. Then sell the stock when you have achieved your target.
