Students and staff at the Hong Kong Institute of Education are united in their support for the blueprint the institute needs to apply for university status, but concerned about the implementation of the proposal.

Two consultation sessions were held yesterday to find the views of staff and students on the blueprint for the institute's future, the first draft of which was passed by the institute council last month. Attendance at both forums was more than 100.

Wong Ping-ho, chairman of the institute's Academic Staff Association, said staff and students supported the blueprint.

He said HKIEd should devise strategies in the face of society changes, including a decline in the birth rate and the emerging trend of lifelong learning.

'While we focus on education in schools, we can look at education in broader terms of improving the quality of human resources throughout their lives,' Dr Wong said.

Some staff members hoped management would advise them on how to tackle these changes, he added.
