Programme scouts stars of the future

Judy Ngao

A summer programme offers teenagers the perfect opportunity to hone their tennis skills.

Hong Kong Tennis Stars of the Future is organised by the Hong Kong Tennis Association (HKTA). Stage One (Challenge Day) of the programme was aimed at introducing the sport to young people in Hong Kong.

It took place at a number of venues across the territory. The activity had barely finished when around 900 places for the second round of the training course were snapped up.

But players of all ages who want to try out the sport for the first time or opt for more advanced courses - all conducted by HKTA-certified coaches - can join the Tennis-For-All Training Scheme, which is run throughout the year.

Tennis Stars of the Future was launched in 1992 with the help of former French Open champion, Michael Chang. The programme provides a valuable opportunity to identify talented youngsters and groom them to be future champions.

Participants aged six to 14 will receive guidance from experienced instructors from Stage Two (training course) to Stage Five (future stars competition). The training schedule will help the youngsters build on their basic skills and enhance their technical ability.

The programme is one of the most comprehensive junior tennis initiatives in Hong Kong.

Depending on further assessment, the players will be invited to join regional training squads under the Junior Elite Development Programme.

Stage Two of Tennis Stars of the Future, which begins next month, will be conducted at venues in the New Territories and Kowloon and on Hong Kong Island.
