PEOPLE looking for all that is modern in genteel surroundings could not help but appreciate the work of Special Assets Properties Ltd, a company that has set out to turn old into new.

Apartments 6A and 6C, at Kem Fei Mansion 68A Macdonnell Rd, are the latest examples of the work by the company.

Special Assets hired interior design firm Simon Jackson and Associates to transform the apartments in the colonial-style building.

At a cost of more than a $1,000 per square foot to renovate, the flats are now light and airy, featuring custom-made furnishings, Asian antiques and Oriental carpets.

''There is a valuable niche market in transforming old flats in Hong Kong into first-class designer homes and holding them out for rental,'' said Special Assets' chairman and managing director Robert Meyer.

The leasing agent is First Pacific Davies. Its executive director, Isabel Michie, said the apartments would suit tenants who wanted a ready-made beautiful home, but were not so keen on the hotel look of most furnished apartments.
