Gigi Lam

Name: Charm Wing-kei

School: Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Grade: Year Three

Sport: Handball

Achievements: Charm, 23, is the captain of the national handball team. He took part in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, where Hong Kong finished in 11th place. The team also competed in the All-China Games last year.

Earlier this year, he played in the International Handball Invitation Tournament in Hong Kong, in which Germany, Iran, South Korea, China and Taiwan took part. Hong Kong were crowned Silver Plate champions.

Soundbite: 'I started playing handball when I was 14. I choose handball because this sport has more variations than other ball games. Handball is also a way to make new friends and keep yourself fit,' said Charm.

'I joined the national youth handball team when I was 16 and later became the team captain.

'I couldn't cope with the tight training schedule at the beginning.

I was wondering whether I could strike a balance between my studies and sporting commitments when I had to train three days a week. But later on, I learned to manage my time better.'

From his coach: 'Charm has shown good leadership skills. He is popular, handles difficult situations well, and ensures harmony within the team,' said national coach Desmond Au.

'With his intense dedication and determination to serve others, he is a good role model for his teammates.

'He has a big passion and great talent for the sport. He deserves to be the team captain.'

Ambitions: 'I will graduate from university this year. Hopefully, I will stay with the team and prepare for the Hong Kong-Macau Handball Invitation Tournament,' said Charm.

'I hope I can become a coach later and help promote the sport among children in Hong Kong.'
