Do you find it tough talking to your parents about school? Are you always arguing with your parents about school stuff? It can be hard to talk to parents about how you are feeling. Here are some things you can do. Tell your parents that you would like to make a time to talk to them about school and your results. This will prepare them in advance and means you won't catch them at a bad time. Find a place where you can relax and be comfortable with your parents. Try and find a time where you will both be somewhere where you won't get distracted. Some teenagers prefer to talk to their parents while they are cooking dinner or watching TV. This is because they don't want to look their parents in the eye. However, it is best to try and talk to them when both of you are not distracted. Also, by looking them in the eye, it shows them that you are telling the truth. You can start the conversation by asking your parents about their day. You could say: 'Before I talk about school, how was your day today?' Tell your parents what it is you want to share with them. For example, if it's about your results, you can say: 'I got my results back today and I want to share with you how I went and where I think I need to improve. I'm really excited that I did really well in maths, but I need to improve in English.' Be honest with your parents. This shows that you respect them and that they can trust you. If your parents react strangely or get upset that you didn't get the results that they expected, try not to argue. Listen to what they have to say. You can tell your parents what type of support you need from them. Your parents may want to offer you extra tutoring and tell you that you need to study more. It's important to listen to your parents and agree on the study hours and the time you have for yourself. Remember, your parents were once teenagers, too. They might have gone through similar situations to yours. You can always ask them what it was like to be in school and not get the results they wanted. Above all, remember that your parents really love you. Often they just don't know how to show that to you.
