HK tycoon's aide confirms bid for Blues

Carson Yeung

Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung Ka-sing's bid to buy English Premiership side Birmingham City was confirmed yesterday by his right-hand man, Sammy Yu Wai-ying.

'All you read in the newspapers is true,' said Yu. 'Mr Yeung has sent a representative to Birmingham to discuss a possible deal to buy out the club. But this is still in the discussion stage and no further details can be given.'

Yeung, former chairman of Hong Kong side Rangers, is planning a HK$770 million bid for Birmingham City.

The team were promoted to the Premier League last month and are the latest in a string of English soccer clubs to attract interest from investors, many from overseas.

Yeung is part owner of the Macau casino Greek Mythology and his plan to buy Birmingham is understood to be his third attempt to buy an English club. He was previously interested in Sheffield Wednesday and Reading.

Birmingham chairman David Gold admitted that he felt it might be the right time to sell up, but also said he believed the current owners of the club would still be in place next season.

'I'm not a willing seller,' he said. 'But that doesn't mean to say that if I thought it in the best interests of the club I would not look at the options.'
