Cuisine: Gastropub casual dining.

Ambience: Lively yet relaxed, 798 Unit & Co has a welcoming decor and is spacious and comfortable.

Price: HK$350 per person without wine and 10 per cent service charge.

Pros: The atmosphere is pleasant and the excellent food came in generous portions. The menu is well thought-out and there's a good variety of dishes. The bathrooms are beautiful - dimly lit with scented candles.

Cons: Past experience has shown that when wait staff try to memorise orders, dishes get mixed up or, worse, forgotten. So, after our waiter took our order without writing anything down, we weren't surprised to get the red wine platter instead of the white that we ordered. But it was quickly rectified.

Recommended dishes: The white wine platter (HK$170, left) is big enough to be shared, with a colourful collection of seafood, vegetables and bread. The octopus was a little too charred, but the prawns were large and juicy and the artichoke had a welcome sharp and refreshing taste. The platter's gorgonzola bruschetta was disappointing.

The star of the meal was the organic pork with apple and potato dauphinoise (HK$160). Served with grilled pineapple, the slightly pink pork was tender and packed with flavour. The rack of lamb (HK$178) was perfectly cooked to a blushing pink and was one of the best pieces of lamb I've tasted. It came with a good assortment of vegetables (other side dishes are available to order separately for those with larger appetites).

The Banoffee pie (HK$42) was rich, sweet and well-balanced, with banana, toffee and biscuit flavours represented equally. The brownies (HK$42) were dry and crumbly, but the accompanying espresso gelato (in place of the usual banana fudge gelato) did the trick.

What else? The original branch of 798 Unit & Co is in TST (tel: 2366 0234).
