CHINESE Foreign Minister Qian Qichen said its restoration of ties with Lesotho demonstrated that any attempts of Taiwan to seek diplomatic breakthrough was doomed to fail. He gave the remarks at a press conference in Nairobi on Monday after a three-day visit to Kenya. The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Lesotho has once again demonstrated that there was only one China, and Taiwan was part of the Chinese territory. China had earlier severed ties with Lesotho after it established formal ties with Taiwan. The current trip of Mr Qian to African countries has been seen as a move to counter the ''money diplomacy'' of Taiwan among poor countries in the region. He visited Chinese-funded farming projects in the Rift Valley province in Kenya and held talks with President Daniel arap Moi and senior government officials. He told a news conference in Nairobi that tribal alliances threatened emerging pluralist democracy in Africa because new political parties were tied to their various communities.
