A day with sports stars

Judy Ngao

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) will organise a sports carnival for students on July 8 to celebrate three landmark events - the 10th anniversary of the handover, the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2009 East Asian Games.

The activity is aimed at promoting a sports culture among teenagers and to encourage them to participate in sports.

HKBU has invited more than 10 well-known Hong Kong athletes to the carnival. Apart from giving demonstrations and advice, they will share their experiences with the young participants.

The day-long event is free, and people will have the opportunity to gain some valuable tips on how to improve their standards.

Participants may also be able to take home autographed basketballs from top basketball players, Adrian Tam Wai-yeung and Poon Chi-ho.

Tam has graduated from an associate degree programme in sport and recreation studies at HKBU.

Other souvenirs include autographed paddles from table tennis duo, Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching, who won a silver medal in the men's doubles at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The head of the HKBU's department of physical education, Leung Mee-lee, said that several major sporting events are due to be held in the region, including Hong Kong, over the next few years.

These include the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with the equestrian events to be hosted by Hong Kong, 2009 East Asian Games (Hong Kong), 2010 Asian Games (Guangzhou) and the 2011 World University Games (Shenzhen). This will bring a 'sporting fever' to Hong Kong, Professor Leung said.

'By inviting Hong Kong's elite athletes to share their experiences and demonstrate their skills, we hope to raise the public's - especially primary and secondary students' - interest and knowledge of sports, and cultivate a sporting spirit,' she added.

'Playing Sports with Sports Stars' will be held from 9.30am to 5pm at the HKBU campus in Kowloon Tong.
