It's time to relax

Summer holidays are approaching fast. You may still have some exams left or you may have finished them.

Either way, you need to relax to reduce your stress levels.

Some definitions of relaxation include becoming less tense, getting a good rest or taking things easy.

When you relax, you reduce anxiety and become a happier person.

Some teenagers tell me they find it very difficult to relax, even when the exams are over.

They are worried until they get their results, and if the grades are bad, the stress may become more intense. This isn't healthy.

Let's look at some ways to help you relax.

Listen to music

Most teenagers tell me the best way to help them relax is to listen to music.

Pick some of your favourite songs, lie down on your bed and listen to the music.

Have fun by singing your favourite songs out loud.

Breathe

When we are stressed, our breathing goes out of control.

If you are finding it hard to calm down, try some breathing exercises.

You can slowly breathe in for five seconds and out for five seconds - repeat this three or four times until you feel at ease.

Treat yourself

Do something to reward yourself for all the hard work you've been doing.

What do you really enjoy doing?

Maybe go to the movies, go shopping, go out to dinner or get a massage.

Spend time with friends Hopefully you have friends who you can have a great time with and who can help relieve your pressure.

Dump the friends that make you feel more stressed out. Friends should support each other.

Laughter

There is a saying: 'Laughter is like medicine to your soul.' The more you laugh the happier you are and this reduces stress.

Laughing is often the last thing you feel like doing while waiting for your results. But it will help you release stress. If you are finding it difficult to laugh, watch a funny movie, read a funny story or talk to friends and family.

Sit in silence

Sometimes just sitting in a place where you can only hear the noise of birds, rain or any other natural sound can help you relax. Enjoy a cup of tea.
