Cone day gives a free lick to group's bid for environmental law update
The weather is hot enough that the lines at ice cream parlours should be quite long. But today they should be especially so at Ben & Jerry's outlets as the premium ice cream maker is holding its annual charity cone day. All Ben & Jerry's shops in the city will off a free cone (or a cup) with an ice cream scoop of your choice from noon until 8pm in return for a donation of HK$10 or more to the Clean Air Foundation. The tradition goes back to the two Vermont founders' habit of giving out free ice cream to support their environmental causes. Last year the group handed out almost 10,000 free scoops of Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, Phish Food and other flavours.
The cause this year, the Clean Air Foundation, is a non-profit organisation that has filed a for judicial review of environmental laws and policies, arguing that they breach the Basic Law and international human rights law by not protecting us from the effects of air pollution. Naturally, the group wants us all to enjoy more Ben & Jerry's to boost the charity total. We're game even if our waistlines are not.
