The kingdom of the fungi (pronounced FUN-guy) includes yeasts, moulds, mildews, mushrooms and toadstools.

Most fungi thrive in damp, shady places such as  between tree roots. If you're not careful, they also grow on bread, vegetables and other items in your cupboard.

While some fungi damage food and kill crops, many are very useful.

Fungi are necessary for making  cheese, beer, wine, bread, penicillin and lots of other products.

In addition, farmers like soil fungi that help make the earth fertile by breaking down plant remains.  They also grow edible fungi such as mushrooms  and sell them.

Mushrooms and toadstools both have stalks topped with caps. Technically, there is no difference between the two.  But most people use the word 'mushroom' to describe the edible varieties and 'toadstool' to describe the poisonous types.
