Why you can trust SCMP

Roy Tam Hoi-pong, high school teacher

'In 1997 I was sitting for the HKCEE. I had two wishes: teaching and doing something to protect the environment. Schools strove hard to improve their academic and administrative performances after education reforms were introduced. Teachers have to spend much more time writing reports under the new policy. Much less time is used chatting with students and getting to know them. That's why moral education is neglected. Students from band one or two can behave quite poorly.

'I hope that teachers will be given more time to understand and talk to the students. After all, the best way to influence a person positively is to set a good example for them.'
