'I was at university in 1997 and volunteering for some green groups. The major environmental issues were how to reduce trash. Air pollution was not given much emphasis.

'Since the handover, progress to turn Hong Kong into a greener city has been slow. There are many sources of pollution and we are not doing enough to tackle them. For instance, a lot more could be done to recycle rubbish, but the government does not do it. We see the economy booming, but people's wasteful spending - on clothes, for instance - only increases accordingly.

'The public is becoming more aware of the need for environmental protection, but the government should do more to lead people to act out their awareness. To be honest, I am not optimistic about sustainable development in Hong Kong. The government does not take it to heart, and business leaders do not see it as their priority, either.'
