With a baby due in September, Discovery Bay resident Paula Donkers had planned to use a hire car to help her get to hospital.
Now, faced with possible closure of the service in two months, she is looking for alternatives.
'It makes you more dependent, for example, calling an ambulance where you probably wouldn't have otherwise,' Ms Donkers said.
She is one of the Discovery Bay residents who are particularly worried that shutting down the hire car system could leave them with few options for quick and affordable point-to-point transport.
But other residents say the hire car system has developed into an illegal taxi service that ignores the needs of people who book the vehicles.
Alternatives should be explored, they say.
Hire cars are 'absolutely essential' for Juilia McKenzie, a homeopathic practitioner, who uses them almost daily to make house calls.
