Deputy Judge Anthony Yuen Wai-ming sentenced Po Shiu-fong on one count of wounding with intent after she was convicted on June 18 for attacking Kwok Wai-ming, 49, in November. Mr Kwok lost his left eye six years ago when Po poked it with her finger during a fight.

In sentencing, Judge Yuen said it was always difficult for the court to determine a sentence in cases of this nature because the violence related only to a domestic dispute and not an attack that endangered society.

'But the court cannot impose a lenient sentence when violence is deployed, fearing that the public may misunderstand that the court tolerates violence,' the judge said.

'Nonetheless, defendants accused of this kind of offence often have a good record of conduct and the violence usually breaks out impulsively or in momentary anger.

'When the matter is taken to court, the couple is usually unlikely to reunite and that reduces the chance of reoffending.'
