The folks at Lan Kwai Fong are obviously trying to milk the 10th anniversary of the handover for all its promotional worth. But its newest marketing design is really pushing the envelope. For this month's Julyfest summer party activities, taking place on July 28 and 29, they have created a poster image and slogan that may raise more than eyebrows. To ride the China-reunification theme a bit more for its beer and food festival, they're using a red-tinged image of a headless bikini girl holding a beer in her left hand. On one of the girl's legs is written '1997' and on the other '2007'. At the bottom of the flier (left) are the words 'and everything in between'. Certainly, it's of questionable taste, a bit lascivious and suggestive, but is it offensive? 'It doesn't offend me but it makes me think the event is probably cheap and nasty,' a female colleague said when shown the poster. For what it's worth, there will be jock-style beer drinking and Tabasco eating contests, and a Miss Julyfest pageant among the beer brand promotional girls circulating that weekend, so the campaign perfectly targets the intended audience. However, we can't help but wonder if Allan Zeman is trying to turn Lan Kwai Fong into Wan Chai?
