Triathlete Ricco Chan Ye-ko and badminton and javelin star Rainbow Woo Wing-tung were given the Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards at the BOCHK Bauhinia Bowl Awards last week. The teens' sporting talents were hailed at the annual awards ceremony in front of hundreds of cheering students at Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School on June 26.

Ricco captured the Sportsboy award for the third consecutive year, but did not hold onto his Cross Country Outstanding Athlete title.

'I have no regrets, because I have helped La Salle College clinch the championship title for the past seven years,' he said.

Rainbow retained her Sportsgirl title for the second year.

'It's been a difficult season; I had to find a balance between training and studying because of my school certificate examinations so I'm delighted to win this award,' she said.

The Sportsboy award in the co-educational school category went to Tom Owen of West Island School.

The talented athlete is an active participant in local football, rugby, cross country and athletics competitions.

The co-ed school Sportsgirl title went to basketball player and cross country runner, Cheng Choi-ling.

'It was a great surprise. I didn't think I would win this prestigious title,' said the St Stephen's College student.

Each Sportsboy and Sportsgirl received a HK$10,000 scholarship.

The Annual Secondary Schools Prize Presentation was also held on the same day.

La Salle College took the championship title in the boys' school section for the seventh year in a row.

Heep Yunn School won the girls' school championship title for the 23rd year in a row.

The BOCHK Bauhinia Bowl Award was organised by the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation (HKSSF) and sponsored by the Bank of China.

Interest in competitive sports appears to be growing as the number of teams participating in the interschool sports competition, which was organised by the HKSSF, reached an all time high of 5,617.

The number of participating students in this year's competition increased, rising to a record 44,950.
