I'm so old I used to backup my hard drive using floppy disks. If I tried that with today's monster-capacity drives, I wouldn't live long enough to complete the task. On the move Seagate Technology, the world's largest computer hard disk manufacturer, has a new option for the home computer user's backup and external storage needs: the FreeAgent family of data movers. The product line is made up of external hard drives packaged with software that allows users to manage all their digital data securely at various locations. Elegantly designed, each device has a brushed-aluminium, espresso-brown coloured case with amber illumination on the side. Copy cat These data movers include the compact FreeAgent Go, which fits easily inside a pocket. It's available in 80-gigabyte (HK$699), 120GB (HK$899) and 160GB (HK$1,199) versions. The FreeAgent Desktop, compatible with both Mac and Windows PC systems, has a Universal Serial Bus 2.0 interface. It also comes in three capacities: 250GB (HK$799), 320GB (HK$899) and 500GB (HK$1,299). Go pro Seagate's top-of-the-line data mover is the slim FreeAgent Pro (below right), which enables users to access their password-protected Seagate Internet Drive. This storage service provides a round-the-clock facility in which to post, access and share a user's files from any computer using the Web. FreeAgent Pro includes a trial offer of 500 megabytes of online space, free of charge for the first six months and upgradeable anytime. It also has the full version of US technology firm Memeo's AutoBackup 2.0, a new breed of so-called continuous data processing software that works silently in the background and automatically processes any file addition or change. With a simple, one-time set-up, all data is automatically backed up, synchronised to multiple devices and easily shared. Memeo claims this application has the ability to backup 500,000 files at once. The standard version of FreeAgent Pro combines two interfaces: USB 2.0 and eSATA, for external serial advanced technology attachment. This is available in 320GB (HK$1,299), 500GB (HK$1,699) and 750GB (HK$2,499) models. A version with dual FireWire 400-standard ports enables data transfer speeds between devices to reach up to 400 megabits a second. This version offers the same capacity choices as the standard combo but with higher prices - at HK$1,499, HK$1,899 and HK$2,699, respectively.
