The Australian Graduate School of Management's (AGSM) Hong Kong MBA programme is supported by corporate sponsors that see it as an important training ground for much-needed talent. There are five sponsorships of HK$5,000 each awarded to students who excel in their studies. Leighton Asia, part of the Leighton Group, is one of Asia's leading contractors and project developers and sponsors the programme because it consistently produces well-rounded candidates to take up managerial positions. Leighton Holdings chief executive, Wal King, and deputy chief executive and chief financial officer, Dieter Adamsas, are the AGSM advisory committee's former and current members respectively. The company has a long history with the University of New South Wales, which founded the AGSM, and many of its employees, including Mr King, are alumni of the university. The sponsorship offers the company access to some of the best and brightest future managers. Its profile has also been raised among the alumni, who view the company as a potential career option. Recruitment company Ambition is another sponsor of the programme. 'We want to contribute to the community, and because our headquarters are in Australia, we are familiar with the AGSM's strong reputation among the business leaders,' said managing director Guy Day. He said Ambition wanted to spread the word about the programme to students, and it hoped to help students with their careers. 'Graduates who are interested in the recruitment industry can apply for positions at Ambition,' he said. 'Ambition is also willing to help them [to find work] as a recruiter.' Manulife Financial offers sponsorships because several of its executives and staff members completed their MBAs at AGSM. In a published statement the company said the programme benefited its staff on a personal and professional level, and it provided them with the skills to tackle key and diverse business issues across the Asia-Pacific region. The programme strengthened the competency of students to take on various corporate and operational roles. Other sponsors of the programme are CPA Australia and Macquarie Group.
