Stopping smoking saves lives

For years, scientists have warned that smoking is bad for your health. Yet people around the world continue to smoke.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that almost five million people globally die each year from smoking.

Smoking is the leading cause of lung disease.

It has also been linked to heart disease, strokes and many kinds of cancer.

Scientists have identified more than 40 chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause cancer in humans and animals.

It is not easy to stop smoking. However, doctors say smokers will probably live longer if they do stop.
