Drink-driver arrested over woman's death

Police arrested a motorist for drink-driving and dangerous driving causing death after his Mercedes-Benz hit and killed a woman in Lam Tin yesterday.

His alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.

It was also revealed yesterday that the number of people killed in traffic accidents increased to 74 in the first six months of the year, up from 62 in the same period last year.

Clerical worker Lau Yee-man, 32, was crossing Pik Wan Road outside Tak Tin Estate when she was knocked down by the car at 8.35am. Police said she was on her way to work.

'After being hit, the victim was thrown into the air, hitting the car's windscreen and was then thrown about 10 metres,' said Senior Inspector Mak Chun-ming of Kowloon East traffic unit.

The car skidded for a distance and then slammed into railings. Its driver, 33, and his female passenger were unhurt.

Lau was taken unconscious to United Christian Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at 9.07am.
