What can be done to help families at risk of domestic violence?
I was shocked when I read about the tragic incident in Sha Tin ('Murder-suicide prompts review', July 10).
The rising tide of domestic violence can be attributed to many factors, ranging from extramarital affairs to financial disputes.
In a society where Confucianism and authoritarianism are entrenched, seldom do victims of domestic violence express their frustration and exasperation. Sadly, this phenomenon has given rise to a spate of tragic incidents in recent years.
It could be argued that social workers are the key to solving many family disputes. There is no doubt their professional advice can help distressed families and thereby prevent tragedies.
However, there are not enough social workers to deal with family problems in Hong Kong. It is not uncommon for social workers to have hundreds of case files.
Therefore, the government must allocate more resources to their training and recruitment.
