Those massive television screens which have become such a common feature at entertainment venues and sports stadiums around the world are now finding a new market.
Property owners and management companies responsible for shopping malls and prime construction projects use them to attract crowds and disseminate information, generating extra interest and creating an additional platform for advertising.
However, the installation of such screens, whether inside or outside, involves detailed planning and many technical considerations.
'Every job is challenging,' said Mark Chan Mun-keong, managing director at Lighthouse Technologies, a Hong Kong company and one of the world leaders in manufacturing and supplying LED screens.
He said that the first consideration had to be the suitability of the proposed site. 'Sufficient property loading is needed to support the weight, which depends on the overall size of the screen and the number of panels,' he said.
Average viewing distance is another key factor and, when outdoors, should be at least 10 metres to ensure the best image quality.
The pixel range available is from 4mm to 30mm, with 10mm or above recommended for outdoor use.
