Surgeons yesterday operated to reattach a worker's hand after it was cut off in an industrial accident in Sai Wan Ho. Mak Chi-keung, 43, had his right hand severed at 9.30am while operating a machine that turns waste paper into pulp. A colleague at the paper- and metal-recycling shop in Hong Cheung Street called emergency services. Paramedics bandaged the man's arm and put his severed hand into a pack of ice before he was taken to Eastern Hospital. The hospital said the man was in serious condition last night after surgery but gave no details on the success of the operation. The Labour Department is following up the case.
