Babek is a far cry from the kebab shops that attract late-night revellers on the streets of many cities. The stylish new restaurant on Elgin Street promises a contemporary Indian dining adventure and requires little decision making on the diner's part. The Babek Dining Experience is HK$250 for four courses, each comprised of several tasting dishes.
The menu begins with a lassi then there are three kebab dishes: (in ascending order of flavour intensity) fresh mackerel in cream cheese with hints of dill; grilled paneer and capsicum (below); and spicy jumbo prawns from Goa. After a palate cleanser of fresh lime sorbet, there is a medley of tandoori chicken, grilled spiced lamb chops and duck breast with cinnamon and orange zest, served with dhal and garlic naan. To finish, the dessert sampler has fresh cottage cheese soaked in saffron syrup and homemade cardamom-flavoured ice-cream. If you can't get enough of a particular dish, Babek offers second helpings at no extra cost. Each item can also be ordered a la carte.
Babek is at 9 Elgin Street, Central, tel: 2975 9332.
