With overseas visitors flooding into the city for a series of 10th anniversary events these few weeks, Hongkongers often found themselves embarrassed by a simple question: what to take home as souvenirs?

Yes, the skyline of the city viewed from The Peak was impressive. The food at a range of restaurants was excellent. Yet, a single item that could capture the essence of Hong Kong seems to be lacking.

What is the essence of Hong Kong anyway?

Government officials say Hong Kong is a world city. The problem is, however, world city seems to be an empty concept, implying this city is without distinctive substance.

In fact, Hong Kong as a world city has been devalued in recent years, at least in the eyes of our fellow Chinese from the mainland. Zhang Zaiyuan, dean of the school of urban design at Wuhan University, recently published an article saying the tendency to model mainland cities after Hong Kong is in decline.

He argues that mainland cities have quickly learned the latest architecture styles and fashion trends. The Hong Kong model is becoming obsolete and mainland cities aspire to be first-tier global centres such as London or New York.

Professor Zhang's remarks highlight the flaw in the concept of world city. The term ignores the essence of Hong Kong while trying to glamorise it.
