Let's stop all this unfair treatment

Discrimination is a big problem in most parts of the world, and Hong Kong is no exception.

People here discriminate against others in different ways. Race and skin colour, sex and physical and mental handicaps are common excuses for discrimination.

Ethnic minorities in this city often find it hard to get jobs. Also, their job opportunities are limited.

Many girls, because of their inadequate language skills, end up becoming domestic helpers.

Ethnic minorities are also discriminated against on language grounds. Many cannot speak Cantonese, and give up  school because of their poor language performance.

They end up becoming social outsiders.

Responsible citizens should do their bit to create a harmonious community.

If we treat people of different races, genders and abilities fairly, and with kindness and decency, we can eliminate many of the conflicts that trouble our society.

Waste not, want not

More than 3,000 tonnes of waste food are dumped daily in Hong Kong's landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Department.

A survey found that only 40 per cent of diners finish the whole plate of rice or noodles they order.

Customers in restaurants and eateries should ask for smaller amounts  of rice or noodles. I have ordered rice dishes that were far too big for me to finish.

I strongly support the less-rice campaign, so  less food will be wasted.

In many developing countries,  people do not have enough food to eat.  We are lucky to be living in Hong Kong. When we see people starving in other countries, we should be ashamed of the way we waste food.

Spare the sharks

Most people are afraid of sharks.  But even with the knowledge that sharks are being hunted to extinction,  they still do nothing to protect these creatures.

In the past, people could afford to eat shark's fin only once or twice a year. But with rising standards of living, people are eating shark's fin eight or nine times a year. The demand for shark's fin keeps rising.

What most people don't realise is that most sharks do not attack humans, and that they die when they lose their dorsal fins, which are used to make shark's fin soup. Some species of shark are almost or already extinct.

We should spread the word  and educate people to save these noble creatures.

All-round pressure

Young people today have a much harder time than young people in the past.

Students have to do a lot of revision after school. They work until midnight, even on weekends.

But they also enjoy a lot of entertainment, such as playing computer games, watching TV and singing karaoke. If they  don't control themselves and keep these distractions at a distance,  their academic results, family  relationships and even friendships will suffer.

Students face keen competition to get into  university. They know their future depends on good academic qualifications.

Just numbers

When our exam results were announced, some of us were delighted, while others became depressed. One classmate said his results had hurt his self-esteem.

Those figures on results sheets should not spoil our positive outlook. Just do the best expected of you as a student, and when you are done with the exam, smile and try not to have any regrets.

Be a sport

Playing sports is good for the body and a good way  to communicate with others and make new friends. It is also  gives you confidence, and that contributes to a happy life.

Playing sports  makes our body healthy and beautiful.

I love sport, but I'm not very good at it. I stay fit  by dancing and running.

History lesson

I visited  the Hong Kong Museum of History, and the exhibition I liked most was 'The Hong Kong Story'.

It is in eight parts. My favourite part was 'The Opium Wars and the Cession of Hong Kong' about how British merchants exported opium to China.

The Qin dynasty official Lin Zexu destroyed all the opium. Britain declared war on China. China was defeated and forced to sign three unequal treaties and cede Hong Kong to Britain.

After my visit to the museum, I tried to look at things positively.

The opium wars resulted in Hong Kong being ceded to Britain, but this helped us become an international city, with a mix of Chinese and western culture. If we stay focused on the advantages in life, we will feel less pressure and enjoy ourselves more.

I look forward to visiting more exhibitions about the history of Hong Kong.

Brotherly love

I have two brothers, one  is 14 years  old and the other is 23. My young brother studies in the same school with me. He is very good at sports like badminton and basketball. He has won a lot of prizes. He helps me with my homework, too.

My older brother has a job. He is good at singing and playing the guitar. He is 10 years older than me, but there's no generation gap between us.

I always share my happy and unhappy moments with my brothers. They listen to me and give me advice. I think I am lucky, compared to those who are the only child in the family. Life without my brothers would be so boring.

Rewarding half-hour

If you asked me what the most enjoyable time of the day is, I would say the 30 minutes before school starts.

Most students take public transport, but I like walking to school. It is very pleasant to go walking early in the morning, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the greenery.

There are lots of trees along the road.

As a Form Seven student, I am under great pressure from studies. That 30-minute walk makes me feel relaxed and it is good exercise.

Thirty minutes may not seem like a long time, but I certainly get a lot out of it.

Historic treasure

I recently visited the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb in Sham Shui Po.  The government has done a lot to protect this important historical site. The tomb is believed to belong to the Eastern Han dynasty (AD 25-220).

After visiting the tomb, I realised how interesting Chinese culture is. I highly recommend the Han tomb. The museum can teach us a lot about our culture.
