Worker dies in fall after platform collapses

A worker died after a nine-metre platform he was standing on collapsed yesterday. Lai Ha-chai, 59, was standing on a wooden platform while painting a wall inside West Island School in Victoria Road when the accident happened at about 10.45am. The school is being renovated. The man, who suffered serious head injuries, was unconscious when emergency workers arrived. He was taken to Queen Mary Hospital, where he was declared dead at 11.16am. The Labour Department is investigating.
