The head of Beijing's Haidian district government, Zhou Liangluo , has been expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from his post.

Mr Zhou, 49, used his official position to benefit unnamed companies and obtain personal gains, including taking a 'huge amount' of bribes and leading 'a decadent life' - a euphemism for keeping a mistress, according to the Beijing Daily.

The top official in one of the capital city's most affluent districts was detained by party disciplinary officials in early April, the report said.

He has been transferred to judicial authorities while criminal charges are pending.

Mr Zhou is the second senior Beijing official to have been toppled in a nationwide crackdown on high-level corruption. Then vice-mayor Liu Zhihua was sacked in June last year.

Political analysts speculated that other senior Beijing officials might find themselves ensnared in Mr Zhou's case when reports surfaced that he had been taken away by investigators from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the party's highest-level disciplinary body, which usually investigates top officials. An official of Mr Zhou's rank would normally be investigated by municipal disciplinary authorities.
