Li Chenglin and Liang Shaowei were arrested yesterday for the murder of Huang Demou , deputy secretary-general of the Shaoguan city government, China News Service reported.

Quoting Shaoguan police, it said Li and Liang, both unemployed, decided to rob Huang after they ran out of money.

Based on confessions obtained from the suspects, Shaoguan police said the pair ambushed Huang outside his home in the Zhengjiang district on Wednesday and stabbed him to death when he resisted.

An earlier report said Huang was found alive by neighbours, who sent him to hospital. But his heart had been punctured, and that probably caused his death. The report did not say how much money was stolen from him.

Robberies have become common in Guangdong cities as public security has worsened over the past two decades of economic development, but attacks have rarely involved government officials.
