Name: Eric Cheng Wai-ho

School: Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU)

Grade: Year Three

Sports: Volleyball, basketball

Achievements:  Cheng, 24 (right), won the Best Athlete and Most Valuable Player titles at the Inter-college Cup this year. He represented Hong Kong at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, and his team finished 13th.

He also played in the World University Games and the Asian Championships in 2005.

He is now the spiker of the Hong Kong national volleyball team.

Cheng  plays basketball, too.  As a member of the PolyU  team,  he participated in the Inter-college Basketball Invitation Tournament  in Taiwan this year.

Soundbite: 'I took up  volleyball when I was 11 years old. I learned  to set targets and achieve them through hard work.  This has helped me a lot throughout my life,'

said Cheng.

'The support provided by my parents and friends has helped  keep me in the sports. They cheer me up when I'm sad.  It's so difficult to handle the studies and practice at the same time without their help.

'Especially before the Asian Games last year, I had to train with the team three days a week, and set aside an extra day for personal fitness training.'

From his coach: 'Eric  has a great passion for volleyball. He is willing to listen to advice and has made good progress over the years. He tries his best all the time,' said  Hong Kong volleyball coach Cheung King-yeung.

Ambitions: 'I will graduate from college this year. I have learned a lot from being an athlete and I think now is the right time to contribute  to society,' Cheng said. 'I'm going to apply for a fireman's job. But I will still continue my volleyball  coaching.'
