Hiroo is an upmarket area of Tokyo where many wealthy Japanese and expatriates  live  - but don't let that put you off. The restaurants on Hiroo's shotengai, or shopping street, offer something for everyone.

Homework's

5-1-20 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku

The highly rated burgers, sand-wiches and salads at Home- work's hit the spot. You'll have to queue at weekends,  but the accommodating staff  provide benches outside among the potted plants. Inside,  a burger, chips  and the crispest onion rings cost about 1,500 yen.

Plates

5-3-15 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku

Here you'll find European cuisine, with  a focus on wood-fired pizzas (1,200 yen), fresh ham and Caesar salads.  Even better is Plates' juicy rotisserie chicken, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables (1,250 yen). Lunchtimes inevitably mean a short wait, but queueing pays dividends.

Priya

Lunchtime is the time to bag a bargain in Japan. At Priya,  you can get a curry, a tandoori-style chunk  of meat, dessert, coffee, masala tea or lassi and as much rice and  naan  as you can eat - all for 1,000 yen.

What's more, the deal lasts until 4pm.  The ala carte menu offers stuffed pimentos filled with cashew nuts and vegetables, served in a masala-style sauce.

Kotobuki Diner

5-3-10 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku

Kotobuki is a lively and bustling izakaya, or Japanese-style pub, serving a wide range of Southeast Asian dishes, including garlic rice for 600 yen and stir-fried morning glory.  The menu also includes   traditional Japanese fare such as yakitori, tofu and  edamame.

Ibiza

5-16-16 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku

This izakaya (left) is a popular spot with the locals and prides itself on its fresh seafood, hence the  reference  to the Spanish party island.  There's  a party atmosphere of sorts in the evenings, when salarymen over-indulge in  Asahi draft beer. Ibiza's signature dish is grilled mackerel,  a popular choice at 800 yen.
