Graffiti artists spray tribute to the late 'King of Kowloon'

It's quite gratifying to learn that a new generation of graffiti artists has created an homage to their most famous predecessor. A wall (above) near the Fo Tan KCR station on Lok Shun Path - close to Lok Shun Road - was tagged over the weekend as a tribute to the late great 'King of Kowloon' Tsang Tsou-choi.

The work includes images of Tsang, Chinese calligraphy and English letters affirming his status as 'the king' and declaring 'the king lives on!'

What is surprising is that some of the artists are French. 'We did the work with another French guy and four other Chinese friends who helped us,' a Frenchman known simply as Orsek explained.

'I think he represents a very important part of Hong Kong's heritage and culture. A lot of people think he was mad but I think he has a very specific style in calligraphy. We did [the painting] in one night.'

The work is apparently visible while riding on the train. As with most graffiti art in Hong Kong, however, you never know how long it will last before authorities wash it away.

'We expect that our work will be repainted again, which is what the government has done to many of our works. This may last for a few days, a few weeks, I don't know.'
