Charriol's most distinctive and alluring design feature is undoubtedly the 'cable design', which founder Philippe Charriol said was conceptualised from the very beginning.

'When I started my company I was looking for a distinctive design and a feminine design, so to speak,' said Mr Charriol.

'I sought something that I could not yet explain. Then on a visit to the British Museum, a small item on display, from nearly 25 centuries ago, caught my eye. In the twisted wire jewellery of the ancient Celtic peoples I saw a timeless design.

'The twisted binds of wire looked nautical, manly almost, and I wasn't sure how it would be accepted. But I soon learned that introducing the cable design was one of my most inspired decisions. The customers loved it.'

The artefact in the British Museum display case was the 'Snettisham Torc'. It was made with great skill and care, and for decades has been considered by historians to be one of the most elaborate decorative objects ever made in the ancient world.

Made from 1kg of gold mixed with silver, it is constructed from 64 separate threads, each only 1.9mm wide. Eight threads were twisted together to make eight separate 'ropes' of metal, which were then twisted around each other to create the design.
