Two teachers jailed over cheeky song

Raymond Li

Two high school teachers in Danzhou, Hainan province , who wrote folk song lyrics poking fun at local government authorities, have discovered that there are limits if you let your creativity run unchecked on the mainland.

The two teachers from Nada Township No2 Middle School were sentenced to 15 days in detention after posting online several lyrics using the local dialect on July 22, to show their disapproval over the relocation of part of the school, Nan Guo Du Shi Bao reported.

The lyrics were believed to have used coarse language in making guarded references to several Danzhou officials linked to the relocation project.

No longer available online, the lyrics attracted dozens of comments and apparently angered authorities, prompting a police investigation.

Quoting sources close to the Danzhou police, the newspaper said the lyrics and most of the ensuing comments were actually the work of the two teachers, identified only as Li and Liu. The teachers were taken away for questioning five days after they posted the lyrics and placed under police detention for slander.
