A COLLECTION inspired by the Lunar New Year won maximum happiness for Simon Ng Suk-ha last night when she won the Overall Prize at the Young Designers' Show, highlight of Fashion Week '94. A 2,000-strong crowd warmly applauded the 23-year-old Sha Tin Technical Institute graduate whose lavish ensembles in velvet, satin and chiffon featured auspicious Chinese motifs. Ms Ng won a cash prize of $15,000, plus a trip to Paris and a trophy. Also triumphant were Cindy Fung, 23, who won the Non-Knitwear Prize with striking layered separates which combined Chinese silhouettes and Japanese motifs; Manderly Ho, 21, who used an environmental theme for her delicate hand-knitted range in soft natural tones; and Wool Prize winner Jenny Tin, 23, whose glamorous range of pure wool evening separates was teamed with mohair and ostrich feathers. There were just two males among the 17 finalists, but male pride was buoyed by 21-year-old Manix Wong who won the evening's biggest ovation.
