At Lulu, a newly opened bar and restaurant on Tsim Sha Tsui's Hanoi Road, the emphasis is as much on unusual drinks as it is on distinctive food. Signature cocktails include the Tom Yum Goong, with kaffir lime and lemongrass, and the Bed of Roses (HK$65 each), named for its fragrant Chinese rose wine base.
Lulu's speciality drinks are decidedly Asian-influenced and so is the food, including dishes such as crab meat and pomelo salad (HK$68), roasted Vietnamese king prawns paired with pineapple (top right; HK$98) and the Lulu burger (above right; HK$72). Manager Jay Yau, a restaurant-industry veteran with more than a decade of experience, says he and his business partners were inspired by their travels in Southeast Asia and decided on a pan-Asian theme for the restaurant.
'There wasn't this kind of bar serving Asian food and drinks [in the area before Lulu],' says Yau. 'I'd like more people to know Hanoi Road.'
Yau hopes the district becomes Kowloon's answer to SoHo or Lan Kwai Fong. Property developers are already touting the block opposite Lulu as 'Times Square in Tsim Sha Tsui'.
Lulu is at 5 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2312 0468.
