Number of registered voters reaches nearly 3.3m
The number of registered voters for geographical constituencies has reached a record high of 3,295,000. A spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said there were about 142,000 newly registered electors. After removing electors who had died or failed to report their latest home addresses, there had been an increase of more than 109,000 voters on last year. Any changes in addresses or other details should be reported to the office by August 29, the spokesman said. All eligible registered voters are entitled to vote in the district council elections in November.
Carrie Lam's popularity rating rises after Queen's Pier row
The popularity rating of Secretary for Development Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor had risen 7 percentage points to 55 per cent after the row early this month over the proposed demolition of Queen's Pier, a survey has found. Security chief Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong retained the top ranking with his rating rising to 79 per cent, while Secretary for Justice Wong Yan-lung held second place with a rating of 74 per cent. The vote of confidence in Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen remained stable at 70 per cent, with 59 per cent saying they thought Mr Tsang was doing a good job. A total of 1,013 respondents were interviewed between August 6 and Friday.
Population swells to 6.92m
Hong Kong's population increased by 64,600 to 6,921,700 in the middle of the year, provisional figures from the Census and Statistics Department show. The increase comprised a natural increase of 28,800 and 35,800 arrivals. A total of 66,200 babies were born to residents and non-residents between mid-2006 and mid-2007 and 44,700 one-way-permit holders arrived over the same period.
