Spotlight falls on Southeast Asia in bid to draw tourists

YUNNAN province is focusing on Southeast Asia in developing tourism - one of its main industries.

Last year it was visited by 380,000 overseas travellers. including Chinese from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. That represented an increase of about 25 per cent on 1992.

Southeast Asians accounted for a large proportion of the total number of foreign visitors.

The province has been actively promoting tourism in the region since 1990. Last year, it sent 145 people on promotion trips to Southeast Asia, mostly Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

It has also set up tourist companies in Hong Kong and Thailand to encourage visitors to Yunnan.

The province aims at having 450,000 foreign visitors this year, and 500,000 next year.
