YUNNAN province is focusing on Southeast Asia in developing tourism - one of its main industries.

   Last year it was visited by 380,000 overseas travellers. including Chinese from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. That represented an increase of about 25 per cent on 1992.

    Southeast Asians accounted for a large proportion of the total number of foreign visitors.

    The province has been actively promoting tourism in the region since 1990. Last year, it sent 145 people on promotion trips to Southeast Asia, mostly Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

    It has also set up tourist companies in Hong Kong and Thailand to encourage visitors to Yunnan.

    The province aims at having 450,000 foreign visitors this year, and 500,000 next year.

    Its tourism started to develop in 1985, but was hit by the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. It began to pick up again in 1990.

    The province has been creating an environment for the industry to grow, including the improvement of infrastructure facilities.

    In 1992, it decided to build a tourism fund of 200 million yuan (about HK$177 million) for infrastructure development in the main tourist and resort districts and for other big tourism projects. To date 100 million yuan has been secured.

    The Government expects Yunnan's tourism to benefit from the development of new air routes, an increase in the number of flights, the development of a rail system, and the re-construction of roads.



Spotlight falls on Southeast Asia in bid to draw tourists
