The great invasion of the internet

The internet has influenced the lives of a large proportion of  society.

It plays a big role in our daily lives, at school, at work and at home.

We can find a lot of information on the internet, and we can use the internet to communicate with one another.

While the internet has revolutionised the lives of many, bringing with it great advantages, it also has its downside.

How good a thing is it to live in a virtual world?

If you spend almost all your time communicating  directly with a machine, will you later have problems communicating with human beings, in normal everyday life?

Many people spend so much time online that they have little time left for their family and  friends in the real world.

The internet world can be perfect. In many ways it is much better than the reality.

If people get too caught up with the  internet, they may  miss out on  the important things of the real world, such as love.

Let us hope  the disadvantages of the internet will not outweigh the advantages.

Food for thought

China is gearing up for next year's Olympics in Beijing. The mainland's international image is very important at this time.

Unfortunately, this image is being tarnished by news about  contaminated food produced in the mainland.

There was a recent case of contaminated dim sum.

Cha siu bau, which traditionally has a filling of pork, was sold with a filling of ground paper and caustic soda, instead of pork.

This was a really disgusting thing for those unscrupulous food manufacturers to do, and it caused much harm to the customers who bought the dim sum.

Meanwhile, stories like this do great damage to China's international reputation and especially the country's tourism industry.

If the mainland government expects to make a success of the 2008 Olympics, it should do more to monitor food production and enforce food safety regulations.

Learn from the losers

In any game, there are the winners and the losers. My parents tell us to observe and learn from the winners. Winners are hardworking and well-prepared. That's what makes them a success.

But we can also learn from the losers. In fact, sometimes a loser's experiences can be more instructive than a winner's.

For example, you can be well prepared, but lacking in confidence.

A lack of confidence is one of the characteristics of a typical loser. Start to think of ways to boost your confidence.

Don't focus only on winners. There's much to learn from the losers.

Video as a monitor

Thanks to YouTube  and the sophistication of technology, we can all  produce short videos with electronic gadgets, such as video cameras or mobile phones, and upload them on the internet.

These websites are very convenient for sharing experiences, such as a singing performance.

You can show your talents and skills  through your videos. The more creative your performance is, the bigger your audience will be.

Also,  these websites can help us monitor one another's behaviour.

A good example is the famous 'Bus Uncle' video, which became a talking point.

Most of us are familiar with this video, which shows two men on a bus having an argument. The argument broke out when one passenger asked another to lower his voice while talking on his mobile phone.

A third passenger recorded the argument on video with his mobile phone.

'The Bus Uncle' video attracted a lot of attention in the media and among internet users. It was a source of great amusement to the public, but it also raised important questions about proper behaviour in public places, and social conduct in general.

Live without regrets

Millions are born and millions die each day. The Earth is big  and the life cycle is amazing. Life and death follow each other in this eternal cycle.  Wise people keep reminding us to treasure what we have and do something meaningful with our lives.

How sad it would be to leave this world without having done anything meaningful or useful. Time passes very quickly. We should cherish the things we have, and life especially. We should have no regrets when we leave this world.

Blind buying

I totally agree with the reader who sent in the letter 'Think twice before you buy something' (Young Post, July 23). I had a similar experience.

I saw a particular product in a store that I liked very much and I bought it. I made the purchase without thinking.

When I got home, I realised how completely useless the product was. Even worse, there was no space in the flat to put it. I recall sighing and greatly regretting the purchase. What a waste of money!

I hope others will not act as impulsively when they visit shops and stores.

Young and positive

Adolescence is the time when we are full of energy and confidence. Young people in general are optimistic and adventurous.

However, there are many teenagers who are unhappy about the way their lives are going.

Some cannot handle the pressure of school work, while others have problems at home.

Some students have to cope with family and school problems. Many get fed up with life and become pessimistic.

It seems that Hong Kong youngsters are not good at coping with pressure.

How will they face  life's challenges when they are adults?

Life is full anxiety and uncertainty. When there are difficulties, we should not let them get the better of us. We must tackle these challenges with courage.

Young people should develop a more positive outlook on life.

The handover anniversary fireworks over  Victoria Harbour were gorgeous.

All that colour and beauty blazing in the night sky were symbolic of China's soaring economic success.

While some people enjoyed the beauty of the fireworks, others  noted the darkness behind.

For instance, the Chinese government's denial of the June 4th Incident  causes many to worry about the future of Hong Kong.

It is now 10 years since the handover, and there are only 40 years left of the mainland government's promise of 'no changes for 50 years'.

We must think about the generation that will be around 40 years from now, and the generations to follow.
