Waitresses wearing French maid uniforms bow their heads and welcome you to Maid Date cafe in Causeway Bay.
This is Hong Kong's first cosplay (from the words costume and role play) cafe and, although it only opened last month, it already has a group of loyal customers.
'It gives me the feeling of being at home. Unlike Starbucks or other crowded coffee shops, the environment here is nice, quiet and cosy. And the maids provide excellent service,' says Lawrence Chan, 21, who has visited several times and enjoys playing PSP with his friends in the cafe.
Originating from the ACG (anime, comics and games) centre in Akihabara, Tokyo, maid cafes have enjoyed huge success in Japan. Manga and anime fans tend to use the cafes, where staff play the role of maids and serve customers deferentially.
'Maid cafes have been open in Canada, Taiwan and Guangzhou for a few years but there wasn't one in Hong Kong despite many young people being manga fans. They had no place to hang out,' says Maid Cafe owner, 28-year-old Alan Chan.
Mr Chan spotted a gap in the market and decided to open the cafe. 'Here in our cafe, manga fans can pamper themselves. We provide comics, animation or games and they can do whatever they like,' he says.
Customers play cards or with their PSPs, chat to the maids, do homework or just spend hours hanging out.
