At precisely 5.03pm yesterday, a throng of people in a corner of the Graham Street market began waving vegetables in the air and shouting.

But it wasn't a row among stallholders getting out of hand - just the latest flash-mob event to hit Hong Kong. Broccoli, string beans and courgettes were among the vegetables that basked in two minutes of glory in yesterday's 'Flash-Veg' event at the corner of Graham and Gage streets.

Even the odd prawn and orange was sneaked in to share the limelight as about 70 people chanted 'Save the street market!', and 'Gai si, gei chin?', meaning 'Market, how much?'

Katty Law Ngar-ning, who lives in Caine Road and is a member of the Central and Western Concern Group, said: 'I held up my broccoli and shouted for two minutes to show my love and support for the Graham Street market.

'It was very moving because I could see that there are so many people who share this love and concern for the market and that is very important.

'I feel very strongly about this market. It is the most historic market in Hong Kong that is still functioning. It is vibrant and I come here regularly to buy my fruit, flowers and vegetables.'
