Victory for 'brilliant' HK
Hong Kong's growing reputation as an Asian sevens power was enhanced when they defeated South Korea 37-5 to spirit away the Cup at the Sri Lankan Sevens in Kandy yesterday.
Hong Kong, who won the Jonah Jones Sevens in Kuala Lumpur last month, added their second title by toppling favourites Korea in a gripping finale played in a rain-storm.
'We just played sublime rugby,' said ecstatic Hong Kong coach Rodney McIntosh. 'It was a fantastic effort by the guys over the past two days and I'm very proud of them.'
Keith Robertson and Rowan Varty each grabbed a hat-trick of tries in the final as the shell-shocked Koreans were left slipping and sliding in the wet conditions underfoot.
'They came out and played brilliantly. It is an incredible result for Hong Kong rugby,' said an over-joyed Trevor Gregory, chairman of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union who watched the final.
Hong Kong booked their final berth with a thrilling 21-14 victory over hosts Sri Lanka in the semi-final.
Anthony Haynes silenced the partisan crowd at the Nittawela Sports Club with a brilliant individual try right on the hooter to give Hong Kong a come-from-behind win.
