The world's largest floating book fair on board the Doulos - the world's oldest ocean-going passenger ship - opened its doors yesterday in its eighth and probably last visit to Hong Kong.
Doulos, which is berthed at Ocean Terminal, will showcase 650,000 copies of 6,000 book titles in the next four weeks excluding Mondays, book fair manager Joseph Parker said.
Mr Parker said most of the books were educational, including some university textbooks donated by charities, and reading material for children as well as some classic novels. An extra 150,000 books will be shipped to the city next week.
About 80 per cent of the books were in English and they were 30 per cent cheaper than those in book stores, he said. Visitors are charged HK$10 admission.
Doulos is a non-profit book fair and has visited more than 100 countries since its maiden voyage 29 years ago.
Twenty million people have visited the ship.
